Type or DIE!

Went to the launch of Stephen Banham’s new book: Characters last night (see here for a great review on Design Files) and bumped into my first Type teacher, Scott Lyon. When I first took the class I had a passing interest in type but by the end of the year I was hooked – I mean we had to be, Scott is such a passionate teacher and type obsessive it was impossible to not be moved by his rants on Helvetica (love and hate depending on the context) and clear love of Gutenberg and his printing press.

For the last six years he has been getting his hands dirty and getting to grips with understanding the traditional ways of printmaking and typesetting. In his own words:

“i love it,
like a “yoga” for me,

the whole process,
the slowing down, the craft,

the hands-on, {not staring at a mac ten hours a day!!}
all blindingly good!”

If you’re in or around Melbourne on the 27th September he is having a show (fleurons) of some of his work at the mailboxes at 141 flinders lane, – it runs until 28th October as part of impact7. See here for more details.
