Shed Light* Call for submissions

Centered around the idea of ‘light’, Melbourne’s ‘The Light in Winter’ is back for a sixth year and is calling for submissions for a new addition to the program – Shed Light.

Shed Light program director, Robyn Archer, is looking for ideas for 10 ‘light sheds’ or pods – unique or illuminated shelters which will occupy the main square for the duration of the festival from 1 June to 1 July in Federation Square.

Applications must be submitted by 5pm, 9 March 2012.

Having been to the Matisse exhibition over the Christmas break it seemed only appropriate to get to his contemporary in Sydney. Picasso in his usual humble manner claimed, ‘Matisse was the only artist among his fellows he considered to be his equal’.
This is a rare opportunity to see so much of his own collection, apparently the Musée National Picasso in Paris is undergoing renovations. http://bit.ly/AxfB3c
To see these works up close can be an inspiration. His Blue and Rose periods tell their story in a muted palette which do not prepare you for the explosion of colour in works like “The Bullfight : Death of a Torero” http://bit.ly/qkQViX
As an aside, my favourite overheard comment came from a young girl to her mother, “The feet on that women are really big! … My Barbie is much prettier than she is!”

This is a fresh look at some world famous brands! While some of the comments the little girl has, are so very cute, they’re also kind of instructive. Designers can sometimes get bogged down in their work, or wade into the dangerous territory that is self contentment… Nice to have to break through the BS and get an innocent eye on this. Gift from John Kaldor

Recently I visited the Art Gallery of NSW with some friends and saw an interesting exhibition. The exhibition was a gift from the ‘John Kaldor family‘. This colourful collection of works represents International and Australian contemporary art. Featuring works from artitsts such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Jeff Koons and Sol Lewitt.

From 21 May 2011 – 2 May 2012. Free Admission. Location: Contemporary galleries, Art Gallery of NSW.

Images were taken by myself on my recent visit and are just some of the works from the John Kaldor Family Collection.

K.W. Doggett have opened up a typography competition with an influence of the Olympic games.

Your poster must include the phrase: ‘It’s not what you win, but how you conquer it’.

The contest will be judged by an international panel head by Jean-Francois Porchez.
